One also must be wary of Phishers.
What then are Phishers and what threat do they pose to the security of online data for ordinary users like u & me?

Phishers create websites that look the same as your bank, online bookstore or other familiar destinations you might visit and where there is exchange of personal information. They then get u to visit their fake website by sending you an e-mail, SMS, or instant message that contains a link. Once you are there, the phisher will trick you into giving away valuable information.

So what can you do to protect yourself?

Think very ~ carefully before handing out personal details i.e. IC/passport number, bank details – online and offline.

If you receive e-mail, an SMS or a phone call asking for personal or financial information, verify its legitimacy with either a phone call or a personal visit to the relevant institution.

Many businesses rely on e-mail to answer customer questions or "email blast" their promotions to the customers on their database but they will never ask you for personal information via e-mail.

If you conduct many activities online such as Internet banking or purchases, keep a close eye on your account.

It pays to be super-cautious. Whenever in doubt, follow your gut feeling and say no! More often than not, saying no in those instances can save u a lot of grief later.
